Why do we need the Fro Gymraeg?

• Without Cymraeg-speaking communities, the language won't survive. This is recognised by language planning experts throughout the world.

• According to the 2001 census, only 17 Cymraeg-speaking communities (those with over 80% of speakers) remain.

• There is an urgent need for solutions, and the first step is to recognise the existence of the Fro Gymraeg.

So where exactly is the Fro Gymraeg?

The Fro Gymraeg is made up of those areas of Cymru where the majority of Welsh-born people speak the language. Here's the map:

The Fro Gymraeg is the area in red. The dark green areas are wards that could be included in the Fro Gymraeg in the future, where over 20% of Welsh-born people speak the language. Support should be made available for them to work towards becoming part of the Fro if that is what they desire.

Needless to say, we are keen to see the language flourishing in all parts of Cymru - but in order for that to be possible, it is vital that we strengthen the Fro Gymraeg at the same time as working to revive the language in other parts of the country.

What policies does Cymuned want to see for the Fro Gymraeg?

• An elected Statutory Council to represent the Fro

• A Housing Authority for Cymru

• Planning permission in the Fro Gymraeg for local people only

• An Economic Development Authority for the Fro

• A Regional Committee for the Fro Gymraeg within the Assembly

• Cymraeg to be the internal language of local government in the Fro Gymraeg

• That individuals who provide statutory public services in the Fro Gymraeg should speak Cymraeg

• Welsh history and language citizenship lessons should be available for incomers to the Fro Gymraeg

• Cymraeg should be the medium of education for all students between 3 and 16 in the Fro

• A Cymraeg-medium Federal University (and more Cymraeg-medium vocational training)

• The development of key towns in the Fro Gymraeg as centres to appeal at young people who wish to live in an urban setting

• To aim at extending the Fro Gymraeg through helping electoral wards outside the Fro to vote to become a part of the Fro
